The story
This was the central packaging plant for the Washburn-Crosby “A” Mill complex, the company that became General Mills, and it housed the first Betty Crocker test kitchen. It was vacated in 1965, damaged by fire in 1991, and bought by the city in 1992.
The 2001–02 conversion by LHB with Paul Madson & Associates added a mezzanine level and won a 2003 Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Award and an AIA Minnesota Honor Award.
What stands out
- A public walkway to Stone Arch Lofts, Mill Ruins Park and the Stone Arch Bridge.
- Underground parking.
- One of the smallest associations on this list.
Before you buy here
- Washburn Lofts shares its condominium (county CIC No. 0935) with Stone Arch Lofts at 600 S 2nd St, so the association covers both buildings.
- Work on historic-landmark buildings can require extra review. Ask about planned exterior projects.
- Ask for the association’s resale disclosure certificate, budget, reserve study and recent minutes. Minnesota law gives you specific rights around that certificate; see our buying and financing guide.
