The story
The Lindsay Brothers sold buggies, harnesses, wagons and farm machinery out of this building, and freight trains pulled right up behind it. Architect Harry Wild Jones, who also designed Butler Square and the chapel at Lakewood Cemetery, drew the original.
A 1909 fire nearly destroyed it; the rebuild added a fifth story. It was one of the first North Loop warehouses converted to homes, in the late 1980s, and was substantially remodeled in 2004.
What stands out
- Distinctive arched windows.
- Brick walls and hardwood floors.
- Close to the river, inside the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District.
Before you buy here
- Next door at 408 N 1st St, Lindsay Lofts is a separate condo association (county CIC No. 1052) with its own parking condo. Make sure listings and documents are for the building you mean.
- The building also has commercial units; ask how shared costs are split between commercial and residential owners.
- Ask for the association’s resale disclosure certificate, budget, reserve study and recent minutes. Minnesota law gives you specific rights around that certificate; see our buying and financing guide.
