The story
The tower was built from 1927 to 1930 for the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, designed by Thomas R. Kimball as the first of four planned towers around a church that was never built. Its stepped, ziggurat shape is rare, and it was known as Ivy Tower from 1965.
A 1990 request to demolish it for 25 parking spaces was denied. It was boarded up in 1993 and stood empty for more than a decade, until an $88 million project opened in 2008 with a hotel, condos, and a new 25-story residential tower attached.
What stands out
- The historic ziggurat tower.
- Hotel services on site.
Before you buy here
- Condos that share a building with a hotel usually have shared-cost agreements between the hotel and the residential association. Read those carefully, and confirm which hotel services residents can use.
- Some lenders treat condo-hotel projects differently. Talk to your lender early.
- Ask for the association’s resale disclosure certificate, budget, reserve study and recent minutes. Minnesota law gives you specific rights around that certificate; see our buying and financing guide.
